Chicken Necks

Postby m1k30rz on Sun Sep 23, 2007 3:51 am

I asked Jasmine about this one awhile ago and she showed me this...

But aren't chicken bones dangerous?!!!

This is one of the biggest myths of all time! Raw chicken bones are fantastic for your dog. They are soft enough so that they bend easily, and break well for the dog to digest.
On the other hand, cooked chicken bones can be a problem, and I recommend that you DON'T feed COOKED chicken bones.

Some people are worried about their dog choking on bones. While such incidents are very rare (far more incidents occur with dogs choking on kibble), I encourage the feeding of bigger portions of meaty bones, or if available, whole carcasses, such as whole chickens or rabbits.

So could a raw chicken bone kill a dog? Well I guess that anything is possible. Certainly scientifically you can't prove a negative argument. However what we do know is that dogs have died from inhaling kibble the wrong way and choking and suffocating to death.

Feeding your dog is about management of risk. No matter which path you decide to take there is always risk. There is always someone who will criticise your decision. However you, and only you can decide what is best for your dogs. Weigh up all the benefits and risks. Do your own analysis. Do your research. Do what will have the greatest overall benefit for your dog.

this is very interesting. My girlfriends dad feeds his dog all kinda of chicken bones, cooked and raw. Never seemed to bother her. He has a pure bred husky.

Tried my two with raw chicken wings once, but they just looked at me as if I was insane, and walked away from them.

Travis gets fed a raw diet because of his allergiesmI switched him cold turkey,he went straight from Burns to raw,I gave him some natural yoghurt for a few days before changing to build up the good bacteria,he did have the squirts for a day but that was it,if you are only going to give the odd chicken wing your dog will be fine,Ruby had her first chicken wing on Monday her belly was fine,to feed Travis raw it costs me about £2 per week

I thought I'd try the boys with raw chicken wings again yesterday. So I lopped them off our Sunday roast and made a huge fuss of "look what I've got". I handed them one each and again they just looked at me as if I was mad. I put them down and shut the dogs out the garden with them . Peeping through the window I saw that Jack had no interest what so ever and Doug just gave it a cursory sniff! and they both came back in. I tried again 10 minutes later-even pretending to nibble them myself and Doug did lick it. Back in again. 10 minutes later one wing was missing! I followed Doug and he was busy hiding it behind a pile of bricks at the top of the garden, but when he saw me, lo and behold he crunched the whole lot up. Jack still not remotely interested. Later that evening my son shrieked "he's got something!" and there was Doug with the second wing, under the table, on the carpet! chomping away. Now I'll have to try an get Jack to eat some too. I'm going to continue feeding their usual meals, but would like to give the raw chicken a few times a week instead of commmercial dog treats. What do you think peeps? Cooked chicken for meals and raw meat for treats.

If your dog is happy eating the chicken raw, give it to him raw, none of the vits have been cooked out of them when you feed raw, even Ruby with 22 teeth missing is having a go at the raw wings, she cannot eat the bone but she strips it down to the bare bone,if your dog isn't fussed on the raw wing, get your frying pan out and just sear each side of the chicken wing for a few seconds, don't cook it just sear the outside

Ruby is fine, she hasn't put a paw wrong apart from she is a dirt magnet, she is between 8 and 11 years old,but she is having no peoblem keeping up with Travis,we went to Cwmdonkin Park with them yesterday and she managed to find a gap in the fence and get in the pond,I have never seen a dog covered with so much green slime in my life, but she really enjoyed herself
