Liver?

Postby Linda S on Fri Apr 04, 2008 6:07 pm

Hi

Anyone know if it's ok to use cooked liver as a training treat? I'm sure I heard or read somewhere you shouldn't give dogs liver?

Thank you

Actually, I feed liver both raw and cooked...small amounts raw mixed in with other raw products and cooked as a training treat...also use garlic powder on it (sometimes) when I bake it in the oven. I lightly press it, cut it and/or do whatever is necessary to make it thin...then I bake it for a while until it is dry. I cut it into VERY small pieces - and use as training treats. My dogs LOVE to work for liver treats.

Hi Rae and welcome!
My two love their dried liver strips, but have'nt tried giving it raw.
OH complains that the smell, when I'm drying the liver, gives him a headache......so now I have to do it when he's out.

Liver is a very good thing to feed your dog---raw or cooked (I prefer to give it raw). But you don't want to give too much at a time--I feed a raw diet as a rule and when measuring the amount of meat per day-you should only feed a quarter of it as liver-----same goes for all organ meats. There is 1 thing to take into account---liver is the place where the toxins in the cow, chicken, whatever end up---Best to use liver from "organic or animals raised healthy-w/no hormones etc. I use a lot of liver from chickens my son-in-law and daughter raise. I would not use raw pork of any kind. Getting off the subject here, but hope everyone that feeds raw meat knows about the danger of using raw salmon---has a parasite fluke that can kill your dog. Supposedly it is the salmon from the Pacific ocean area, including California--but cautious me won't feed any raw salmon, although freezing is suppose to be okay--can't remember how long you have to freeze it but seemed like so many days.
