What do you feed your dog?

To get some conversation going here, a little poll!

Mine:

Rhea is on raw (prey model) because she cannot handle any kind of dog food for some reason. She has a lot of allergies and it's just easier for me to prepare her meals for her myself.

Achilles and Qenna used to be on a brand called Kirlkland from Costco. However, after aquiring a purebred show cat, I learned about a food called Taste of the Wild (which is what kitty is on). I checked out the dog food version of it and it looks pretty good and is comparable in price to Kirlkland. They've been on it for a few weeks now and are doing great! :) They also get raw treats/meals from time to time when I can afford it.

Well the Herbster has boiled chicken or mince beef with brown rice and veg also has raw chicken wings..I usually buy the chicken cheap and then have a morning preparing it and making it up into meal portions and then freeze it

Working it out it is cheaper then buying tinned food and more healthy for him

Hi We're new here to this site. I used to feed Solid Gold and it made a tremendous difference for the good from the grocery store brands. But then I read and heard about the raw diets you mentioned. What is prey model? Where do you get it. We live in western PA, so would I have to order it or is there a website? My Elsa is very sensitive to all foods and currently is on premium wet since it is easiest for her. Her "brother"(no relation) is on mixture of both.

I am amazed that you feed your dogs raw food. It has not caught on in the U.S.A. To be honest, I am afraid of salmonella. After the dog food scare in the U.S.A. I would like to find a alternative dog food that I know is healthy for Sedona and Mocha.

Prey Model is just 100% raw meat and bones, unlike BARF which includes veggies and some grains. I usually get the meat from a local organic market and friends who are hunters (lol I have about 50lbs of Elk in my freezer right now).

I used to be part of a co-op, where there were 5 or 6 members who all ordered in bulk for lower meat prices (the more you buy, the better price you get per pound) but I had to drive to Denver for that and it was getting a bit pricey.

Honestly, dogs rarely get salmonella, but you have to prepare the meat, so you have to be very careful for yourself and make sure to clean your preparation area thoroughly, your hands (and arms, face, heck, just take a shower when you're done, lol.) and anything you have touched while preparing the meat. Rhea doesn't use a bowl (we just chuck her food outside, less mess that way and then clean the patio area afterwards with a power hose) but if your dogs do, be sure to wash it after every use. I've been feeding raw for about 6 years and haven't gotten salmonella yet.

The dogs were very happy today. It was clean out the fridge and freezer day and anything that was healthy for them went in their bowls. They all got elk, milk, egg, cheese, and some green beans :)

I'm feeding my dog table food since she snobs the dog food that I give her.

I fed my late dog, Kenai, table scraps but refuse to give them to Kody as Kenai got a bad bad bout of pancritis (think it's spelled wrong...lol) and vet said it is partly caused by the high fat content in people food. I feed Kody Kibbles & Bits Chicken. I add a spoonful of canned, that way he thinks he's getting something from the fridge!!

For a dog that was found abandoned and starving, Lucy is picky as can be. She won't touch any bagged or boxed dog treat. I have to cook her "real" treats. Chicken livers/gizzards/hearts are her favorites. She also likes ground beef and baked turkey breast. It's a lot cheaper, too, actually, about a fourth of the price. And it's fresh with no chemicals. I feed her holistic dry food mixed with low sodium broth and holistic canned food, and throw in some treats as listed above. She likes that okay, but is still picky.
