After feeding various Kibbles my boy was suffering with terrible allergies the only kibble he was okay on was a food called Burns but it kept him underweight, after much reading I changed over to a raw diet, the allergies dissapeared within a few weeks,he does have homecooked sometimes very similar to the beef stew mentioned but I use chicken.I have also found a new dry dog food which is fab it's called Robbies holistic dog food,no additives, wheat gluten free no soya and it agrees with Travis so if I go away for a few days he gets fed this as my dog sitter is a veggie and refuses to feed raw

Thanks! The dogs have done pretty well on that plan so far. We start training & conditioning in the Spring, run Hunt Tests & Trials in the Summer, and hunt in the Fall. During the Winter, we really don't do much hard-core training (it's kinda hard to run 100 yard marks when it's below zero outside, lol!) so they don't really need the little extra protein & fat they get from the Performance, which is why we switch them over to regular Adult C&R. The dogs switch pretty smoothly from one to the other. The only difference they seem to notice is the shape of the kibble. I hope that answers your question anyway!

That sounds great!! How did you come up with that feeding plan?? is there any chance you could tell us more about how you go about training your dogs? maybe make a little thread with some basics? it would be very much appreciated as we are trying to get more content here and credit is always given :) You will also become part of our contributors group!

Haha yeah with that temprature it would be hard! I assume you keep the dogs inside when its that cold ?? It never gets that cold here in New Zealand luckily :yay:

I feed my dog a mix between beneful and table scraps. We usually eat many things that he likes anyway, such as steak. If we are going on vacation, we pull out the beneful, but he really doesn't like it that much. I think it is because the "beneful" brand doesn't taste quite that good.

My mom fed him chocolate at least a few times a week since he was a puppy and he lived to be 18 before he was put to sleep. He was a beagle/something mix. We got him for free before I was even born. I'm not sure what he was mixed with though I think the other half was a brittny

The Chocolate thing definatly is not a myth as dogs are lactose intolerent meaning that they can not tolerate too many items containing lactose. Milk contains a great deal of lactose as does chesse hence why you should not feed your dogs too much if at all any of either of these two.

Also any cooked bones are a no go as all cooked bones can splinter and get stuck in their throats etc..

If you are going to give your dgos bones, best to give them raw bones from your butchers!

Maybe I'm mad, but I cook for my dogs. Brown rice,(boiled fresh twice a week and stored in the fridge) boiled chicken portions,(meat stripped from bones, chopped and then bagged up for storage in the freezer) and boiled carrots and brocolli( mashed up and bagged for the freezer). They get 2 tablespoons rice, 2tbsp chicken and 1 large dollop of veg. per meal. I also give them a small handful of Burns chicken& rice to go with it.They thrive on this and in the last 12 months Doug has not gained any weight and Jack has gained just 1/2 kilo in a year.

All 3 of mine are on BARF when we can afford it. Rhea is on it all the time because last time when we couldn't afford to feed all 3 BARF, I put them all on kibble and she got horribly sick and was licking her feet all the time, her coat got dull and dry, and she just looked horrible, so I will never put her on kibble again. The other 2 do well though. So when its too expensive for all 3, Achilles and Libby are on Diamond Premium Adult, though I prefer raw over kibble anyday. :) No doggy odor when they're on it, poops are small and not as smelly and they don't shed nearly as much.

Well I don't have any dogs but when I do they will get either Canidae or TimberWolf Organics. I would LOVE to go raw but I don't know if I'll be able to afford it. So those who say they feed their dogs table scraps, do you mean meat scraps and veggies or other stuff too, it doesn't sound like the most complete diet is all...Since learning about good foods I'm very picky, my dogs will never be fed Purina, Pedigree, Beneful, Iams, Eukanuba or Science Diet ever again (same for the cats, they get Felidae).

I try and feed mainly high value protein foods and stay away from foods that contain but minimal corn and high carbs/fillers. How much corn is in your bag LOL

cheers

I feed my boys Innova Evo. It's high quality. Most anything you can find in a regular grocery store has a low nutritional value and is packed full of fillers.

The most important thing you can do for the health of your dog is read the label. The first 3-4 ingredients should be meat of some sort. Stay away from glutens, as they are just bad.

Table scraps are not good for dogs. Sure they love the taste, but that doesn't make it good for them. If we allowed our children to eat cake, ice cream, cookies, and candy all day, they most likely would. Luckily, we as parents know that they would not thrive on such food, and we make them eat their veggies. It's the same with dogs.

Any bones are OK if they are raw. Cooked bones splinter. Especially chicken bones.

My dogs' favorite foods are raw chicken and raw beef.

Puky likes only Chappy dry food. I tried tons of other products, but she didn't eat them...

@ Poco's Playhouse: I heard raw meat will make your dog go wild... Don't think it's safe...

Raw meat doesn't make your dog go wild. That is a wive's tale. Many of the good dog foods are made from raw meat. It's what their bodies are meant to eat. I know lots of champion breeders that feed raw meat. Not necessarily as a main diet, but as a supplement. Some do use it as part of a main diet, though.

I feed my two on Nature's menu, it has everything they need and they love it. They get scraps as well and sometimes home cooked, rice and tuna/chicken etc

I always have nice empty bowls :D
