Cycling?

Postby Linda S on Sat Mar 29, 2008 8:20 am

Hi everyone

Was thinking of taking my dog cyling for a change and wondered if you guys had any tips? What sort of leash do you recommend? And any special tips for getting it right?

Thank you

I couldn't say on that one i tried meg on a lead but we ended up in a raffle & me nearly falling off, Id imagine it would depend on how well trained your dog is & adapts to the pace of the bike, Our problem was keeping at the same speed but to be honest i didn't try very hard, When we were out in the country she happily ran beside me off the lead, Iv'e seen elasticky type leads that might give a bit of leeway, But cant offer any good advice sorry, Just had a thought maybe a long retractable lead would work, Hopefully somebody can help you though

Hi Linda,

There's a couple of things.

1. You can buy an attachment that goes on the stem of your seat that you can attach a lead to and the dog can run along happily behind. Most cycle shops sell them and if not I could probably refind the link on the internet that I saw them on!

2. Keep the lead away from the handle bars unless you are 100% confidant your dog will run alongside happily. I tried with Dexter and he was fine until he spotted a cat! Then me, Dexter and the bike all went headlong into a parked car that said cat had run under! Luckily no one was hurt and the car wasn't scrtached (we hit the wheel luckily).

I guess a lot will depend on how happy your dog is to just trot alongside you versus wanting to go off and sniff/explore other things.

Finally, how old is your dog? Young and old dogs can't manage much more than a fast walking pace for too long so just bear that in mind.
