Nail Clipping

Postby superchargedprelude on Sun Sep 23, 2007 3:51 pm

Nail clipping is a tough job with my dog she hates it. actually i think it scares her more than anything.
So what i do is put her on her back on top of my feather pillow, then i kinda lay across her and grab a paw and start clipping. while doing this im constantly talking to her in a soft comforting voice. then after she is done i give her a treat.

What your experiance with clippings and your methods

What the show pups are used to is being up on a grooming table and having their feet lifted up and trimmed. They make no fuss about it at all.

I'm scared I'm gonna hurt them by clipping their nails so I let my dad do that job.
I've got a feeling in my heart, and a question on my mind.

the groomer down the street cuts em for 5 bucks, no harm to us. I'd just find a groomer to do it, they're professionals after all.

Our pup threw an absolute fit the first time she got them done. We haven't had her back since, but its scary. She'll wine and yelp till she cant talk no more lol. It's fine though, the ones that aren't used to it hate the "clip" noise and freak out.

If you're cutting your dogs nails for the first time id reccomend getting some of the stuff from the pet store its a poweder usually called "Quick stop" or something so if the quicks in your dogs nails start to bleed it will stop it :)

We have a lot of trouble with herbies nails at they grow really quickly and in a curve they are also dark and so it is hard to see the quick. we have a free vet nail clipping service but he hates them being cut We have recently had to change our vets as the last vet had to muzzle him as he hates his feet being touched.

because of the way his nails grow no amount of road walking makes any difference :(
we seem to be at the vets a lot more with herbie than we ever were with our other dog, still never mind hes worth it

Being nervous about doing this I asked my vet to do it, but he made a bit of a mess of it to be honest! So I bought dog nail clippers and got my hubby to do it! Had a few mishaps when Doug pulled away, but generally O.K.

lol, of course they do! I have friends in England so maybe next time I'm out there, though it seems like you have the situation under control now :)

I think that all dogs should be conditioned to except nail clipping and is a part of socializing a dog.

here is a link that provides some videos of nail clipping 2 reluctant dogs :dogrun:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZ9kdc9bktQ&eurl=http://darnfar.com/Dog%20Training%20Videos/nala_nail_trim.htm

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abORxeAh7xw

Obviously there is more than one way to approach this issue depending on the situation and the dog at hand. :dogwalk:

edited .I have also included this link to a discussion about these videos for consumption..
